Since 1992 he has worked as a principal investigator in the Laboratory of Computational Biomedicine of the Institute of Computer Science of the Foundation for Research and Technology Hellas (FORTH-ICS). In the period February 2012 to April 2019 he was a member of the Department of Informatics Engineering of the technological Educational Institute of Crete (TEI Crete). Since May 2019 he is Professor of Biomedical Informatics and eHealth at the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering of the Hellenic Mediterranean University. In parallel, since 2012 he is a visiting professor/researcher at FORTH-ICS.
Prof. Tsiknakis was the recipient of the eEurope/eHealth Award in 2003 for the design and implementation of the regional health information services network, known as HyGEIAnet, and received the award for best applied-research of FORTH in 2004. He has been the Scientific Coordinator or Principal Investigator (PI) in many R&D projects co-financed mainly by the EU.
He has undertaken a series of administrative duties and has been elected and served in various positions of responsibility, including: head of the Laboratory of Biomedical Informatics of FORTH (2002-2006), Head of the Department of Applied Informatics & Multimedia of TEI of Crete (2012-2013), Vice-rector for Research and Infrastructure Development of TEI of Crete (2013-2017). Prof. Tsiknakis has been the founder of the research laboratory of Biomedical Informatics (BMI lab) in 2012, a research unit with active participation in many R&D projects, of which he is the scientific director to date.
